First Team Match Reports
Halwill 3 - 1 Broadclyst
The games between these two sides usually contain a fair bit of needle, and this was no different. This was a hard fought game, but in the end Halwill had a bit too much quality for Broadclyst. For the first fifteen Minutes the two sides were evenly matched as they were finding their feet, but the game exploded with, what can only be described as a world class goal. Thomas Ogbourne robbed the Broadclyst winger in the Halwill half; he then carried the ball over the halfway line, beating two players in the process. From just inside the Broadclyst half he sent a long, high ball deep into the visitor’s penalty area. Coming in off the left wing was Chris Barkwill, running at full tilt he didn’t even have to break stride as he volleyed the ball into the back of the net from ten yards. The players and spectators that witnessed this awesome goal have surely never seen a better goal, either live or on the box.

The remainder of the half was again evenly contested, but Halwill went in at half time with the advantage. The second started much differently, the visitors came out with the bit between their teeth, and for ten minutes Halwill were under serious pressure. Broadclyst were rewarded for their efforts when their striker was upended in the box, and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. The penalty itself wasn’t the best of strikes but it managed to squeeze past Phil Wonnacott in the Halwill goal. After this Manager Andrew Winser knew something had to change. He brought on some fresh legs and this seemed to change the way Halwill were playing. Rob Holland came on for Ross Slade; this allowed Ogbourne to push forward which may have made the difference. The home side started to control the game again and were again looking threatening going forward. Halwill went ahead Midway through the half when it was their turn to be awarded a penalty. This time the kick was well struck, by winser and the keeper had no chance.

At two-one Halwill knew the game was far from over, but they handled everything the visitors had to throw at them, and made the game safe when Mani Wonnacott scored late on to make it three-one.

Halwill 2 - 0 Sidbury Utd
This East Devon cup, second round game was always going to be tough for Halwill, against a Sidbury side that almost got promotion last year. The visitors started strong and Halwill were finding things hard going. The first thirty minutes went very much the way of the well organised Sidbury side. Manager Andrew Winser felt that a change was needed, and decided to switch from 4, 4, 2 to a 3, 5, 2 formation. Bringing on Ross Slade, to sure things up in midfield, to replace young Ryan Hauerslev. This changed the flow of play almost immediately. The home side started to get hold of the ball, but more importantly win the midfield battled. Halwill took the lead on the stroke of half time, through what is becoming a trademark set piece from a corner. The taker was Andrew Winser, who drilled low and hard to the near post, where lee Parsons timed his run perfectly to drive the ball home.

The second half was more of the same, as Halwill were again dominating much of the play. Although they were creating all the pressure Halwill couldn’t double their advantage until twenty minutes from the end. A quick throw on the right found Mani Wonnacott, who laid the ball off to Jimmy Sowden. Jimmy, with his back to goal turned his man expertly and found himself one on one with the keeper. The advancing keeper had no chance as jimmy poked the ball past him into the bottom left hand corner. After the change of formation Sidbury created very little, and Halwill go through to the next round.

Halwill 2 - 0 East Budleigh
East Budleigh beat Halwill in the league a fortnight ago, so the home side were out for revenge in the cup. The first half ended 0-0 as both sides cancelled each other out. The second half will be remembered because of a stunning strike from Chris Barkwill. The game was a real stalemate and needed a touch of class to ignite it. Barkwill provided the class with a 30 yard thunderbolt that flew past the visiting keeper. After this there was only one side in it, and Halwill increased their lead through Mani Wonnacott. This was a professional like performance from Halwill and well deserved their place in the next round.

Halwill 2 - 2 Culm Utd
If Halwill are to do well this year, Culm is the sort of team they should be beating. However the home side were sluggish throughout the game and in the end got out of jail with only seconds remaining. Halwill should have taken the lead early in the game when a Jinking Mani Wonnacott was felled in the penalty area. Chris Barkwill was confident enough to step up to the spot, in the absence of Andrew Winser who was managing from the bench. Barkwill hit the ball true and hard, so hard that it sailed over the bar and nearly reached Okehampton!

The visitors were gifted a chance to go one up midway through the half when Ben Potter was judged to have fouled a Culm striker in the box. Halwill were enraged with the decision as Potter got all the ball in an excellent challenge. Culm, unlike Halwill made no mistake from the spot, and started to press for another. They got what they were looking for a few minutes later when the home defence failed to clear inside the box and were made to pay.

The second half was as scrappy as the first, and neither side could get going. Winser Decided it was time to bring on the big guns, Replacing Mani and Barkwill, with himself and Jimmy Sowden. This seemed to have an immediate affect, with the home side looking a lot brighter. Halwill got back in the game, when Winser struck a corner low to the near post, where Lee Parsons was well placed to knock the ball home.

With time fast running out, Halwill at last started putting some urgency into their play. It was all one way traffic for the last ten minutes and with only moments remaining the home side got their reward. Some neat play on the right flank found Winser, who created himself a yard to clip in a delightful ball. Jimmy Sowden rose the highest in the six yard box to head home the equaliser.

Beer Albion 1 - 2 Halwill
Halwill made the long trip to Beer looking to get their first points on the board. Having also lost their first league game, this was an important afternoon for the home side. Beer had the better of the opening exchanges, and was cheered on by their vociferous fans. Phil Wonnacott in the visitors goal was kept busy in the first fifteen minutes, pulling off a string of superb saves to keep Halwill in the game. Although Beer was on top, they took the lead through controversial circumstances. Halwill’s back four kept a tight line, and as a through ball was passed, the Beer striker looked to be yards offside, but the lino ( with the partisan crowd on his back ) failed to raise his flag. This gave the two home strikers the chance they had been looking for, and they made no mistake.

Halwill rallied themselves, and the goal seemed to spur them on. The visitors started to get hold of the ball and string passes together. The midfield four was linking the defence and attack well and chances were being created. With Halwill well on top they needed to score, and they did from Chris Barkwill. Luke potter, on his return to the side, made a great run into the box and unselfishly pulled the ball back. Chrisy Barkwill met it first time, and gave the keeper no chance as his crisp finish hit the back of the net.

Beer Albion’s confidents were now shot and the visitors took full advantage. Only a few minutes had passed when Halwill doubled their lead. This time it was Ryan Hauerslev that was credited with the assist. He slowed his defender before dropping his shoulder and out pacing him down the right. A delightful cross found Chris Barkwill who miss-timed his header. The ball fell to Mani Wonnacott whose shot on the turn found the bottom corner.

Halwill began the second period expecting the home side to come out firing on all cylinders, but the visitors were very solid all over the pitch, snuffing out anything Beer threw at them. Halwill were well on top for the remainder of the game and never looked in danger of losing their advantage. At the final Whistle the visitors were well deserved winners, and made the long trip home with all three points.

Team; Phil Wonnacott, Darren Martyn, Ben Potter, Rob Holland, Elliot Collins, Ryan Hauerslev, Lee Parsons, Thomas Ogbourne, Chris Barkwill, Mani Wonnacott, Luke Potter.

Subs; Andrew Winser, Greg Hutchins, Jimmy Sowden

Landkey 1 - 2 Halwill
One of Halwill’s aims at the beginning of the season was to have a good run in one of the cup competitions. This game, on paper, looked like it was going to be a tricky first round tie. In truth Halwill should have won this game by a country mile, but made very hard work of it. Throughout the game the visitors were very poor, and had the home side been half descent could have progressed through to next round with ease. As it was Landkey were marginally worse than Halwill. Halwill had countless chances in the first half but converted none; the home side however struggled, with the visitors’ defence looking pretty solid.

The second half was more of the same until, Mani Wonnacott gave Halwill the lead. This should have settled the visitors down a bit, but it didn’t and Landkey grabbed an equaliser with just five minutes remaining. With the game looking like it was heading for extra time, Mani Wonnacott finally showed his class, by picking up the ball and weaving his way past defenders and the keeper to slot home his second, and the winner with only moments left on the clock.

Subs; Jimmy Sowden, Tom House.

Halwill 1 - 3 Seaton Town
The first game of the season is always an eagerly awaited affair, and this was no different. Both sides are starting the campaign with high hopes for the season. The game its self didn’t take long to get going, as Halwill had the better of the opening exchanges. Within the first twenty minutes the home side could have been three or four goals in front, but some very poor finishing and some bad luck kept the visitors in the game. Seaton had rarely threatened in the first quarter, but they took the lead with their first real attack. Bad defending was Halwill’s downfall, as it was for the visitors’ second goal a few minutes later. Halwill were now rueing those missed chances early in the game, but were still pressing forward. From a corner Rob Holland had the ball in the back of the net. But as he wheeled away in celebration the ref inexplicably disallowed the goal to thwart the home side.

The second half brought a change in formation for Halwill, switching from 3, 5, 2, to 4, 4, 2. This paid off immediately. Within a minute of the restart Lee Parsons found himself in space on the edge of the area, and sent a thunderous shot past the Seaton keeper. With Halwill now back in the hunt, they went in search of the equaliser. After the goal the visitors regrouped and defended resolutely. Halwill dominated much of the half but couldn’t find a way through. Seaton were gifted a third goal late on to seal the three points, and Halwill were left disappointed at the final whistle, that they hadn’t made the visitors work hard for their goals.
